CONCORD, Calif. (KRON) -- A man was arrested Saturday at a Concord apartment complex for squatting at a vacant home. More than 300 residents live at Northwood Townhouses and many of them started to notice a pattern of their packages being stolen. Home security cameras caught a man going door to doo r, stealing packages and looking in mailboxes. Max Mejia posted on Nextdoor about the thief and a neighbor helped figure out who was responsible by posting a video of the thief walking into one of the townhouses after stealing a package. But the unit was supposed to be vacant without tenants.  Home security cameras caught the person again in Concord. Wearing a hooded sweatshirt and stealing packages or looking through mailboxes, Max Meijia moved to Northwood Townhouses this year. He posted about the thief on Nextdoor. A neighborhood helped figure out who was responsible by posting a video of the thief walking into the home next door. Mejia said he suspected about six people were squatting in the townhouse. For about three weeks, he continued to post on Nextdoor warning residents and calling police to complain. "It’s just you think of what they're capable of. We have families here; we have kids who play here; people walking pets all the time. So thinking that we have individuals who steal, they are constantly scouting to do what they want to do," Mejia said. Residents were able to track down the owner of the townhouse last week. Mejia says the unit had been rented before, but was currently vacant. According to Concord Police, the owner contacted police Saturday. Responding officers located three people inside. One of them, a 44-year-old man, was arrested and charged with trespassing, occupying the property without consent, false identification to a peace officer as well as several outstanding warrants. “Good,” said Mejia. “I’m content with unauthorized individuals being removed from the place.” ...read more read less
