A federal judge is expected to decide Tuesday whether more than two decades of federal oversight of the Oakland Police Department will come to an end. There are a couple of possible outcomes. Federal oversight could end altogether, leaving Oakland to run its own police department, or the departme nt could remain under federal court oversight. Ending federal oversight has been supported by the city of Oakland and civil rights advocates. Last weekend, a coalition called Safe Oakland gathered to say it is time for the community to take over and for the city to run its own department. It has been more than two decades since the city of Oakland settled a class-action police abuse lawsuit involving 119 people for $11 million. Four officers were prosecuted on felony misconduct charges stemming from the so-called “Oakland Riders” scandal, but none were convicted. The scandal led to a court-approved agreement requiring sweeping reforms. Earlier this year, a federal judge declared the department in compliance with all reform measures. More recently, OPD’s federal monitor reported the department had fallen short of compliance with a specific benchmark requiring timely investigations of officer misconduct complaints. Two civil rights attorneys are proposing a one-year extension of oversight by a federal judge. A federal court hearing is expected later Tuesday.
