INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The Indianapolis Colts earned their first win of the season on a 53-yard game-winning field goal by Spencer Shrader with 21 seconds remaining. Quarterback Daniel Jones and the offense took over trailing 17-16 with a minute to play and moved to the opposing 38-yard line in five plays. Facing 4th-and-1, Shrader drilled his fourth field goal of the afternoon to seal the victory. After the win, Shrader told Sports Director Anthony Calhoun how thrilling it felt to deliver in the game’s biggest moment. “I’m just super blessed that I was able to keep my composure there, execute my job,” Shrader said. “My teammates are incredible. I know that they’re going to get the job done for me. I just got to put it through the uprights. And then the celebration after is pretty special to see those guys so happy.” Colts team captain and second-year safety Cam Bynum shared his sideline perspective during the kick. “I watched, I watched everything,” Bynum said. “I need to see it, because when he makes it, I need to see the excitement. I don’t want to watch it from a screen; I can do that at home. I have belief in him [Spencer Shrader]. I don’t stand up; I sit there on the bench like, he does this for a living, so I expect him to do it, and he delivers every single time.” Shrader’s availability had been uncertain earlier in the day. Listed as questionable with a groin injury, the second-year Colts kicker suited up and went a perfect 4-for-4 on field goals. He explained how he overcame his pregame injury and stayed focused for all four quarters. “In warmups, I had a little groin thing on one of the kicks, and I was like, oh, that’s not good. You don’t want to make that worse. So I talked with the trainers and the coaches, and they decided to let Rigo handle the kickoffs, which he did phenomenally. And then for me, it was just monitoring myself, making sure I didn’t do anything to exacerbate the injury, make it worse. But just keep my head down and go to work and finish out the game.” Running back Jonathan Taylor praised Shrader’s resilience. “We knew what kind of player that Schrader was, but we’re just so proud to see how he fought back to get to this moment,” Taylor said. “And whenever someone goes through adversity like that and going through an injury, so it was a really cool moment to see him have that today With the win, the Colts improve to 1-2 and turn their attention to the Washington Commanders next Sunday, Oct. 3, in London. ...read more read less
