RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Jim Ukrop, the eldest son of Ukrop's Super Markets founders Joe and Jacquelin Ukrop, died in Richmond on Friday at 89 years old. He is survived by his wife Barbara “Bobbie” Berkeley Ukrop; his brother, Robert “Bobby” Ukrop; his sons, Scott Ukrop and his wife, Lilo; J oseph Edward “Ted” Ukrop and his wife, Katie; his five grandchildren, and his three great-grandchildren, according to William and Mary's alumni magazine. In a post made to Instagram on Saturday, Sept. 26, Richmond Mayor Danny Avula said "This weekend, Richmond lost an incredible leader, laborer, and friend." In 1937, Jim's father Joe opened the first Ukrop’s Market at 3111 Hull Street in South Richmond. In 1960, Jim joined the business full-time and became the force behind the expansion of Ukrop's Super Markets, according to the company's website. By the end of the 1960s, Ukrop's had expanded to five stores in South Richmond and Chesterfield County. The chain had grown to 29 locations throughout Central Virginia before it was sold in 2010.
