Doors to the Kennedy Center are locked, and barricades block the performance arts center’s entrance. But new allegations about what happened behind those doors are raising fresh questions about its closure. The main building was shut down Sept. 15 following a board of directors meeting. Kennedy’s legacy, but when it didn’t, he exploded with rage. Trump’s attempt to strong-arm a favorable decision not only backfired but cast doubt on his claims about the building’s damage. His administration has pointed to the Kennedy Center’s deteriorating condition as part of its case for closing the storied arts institution. They cited a September 4 ceiling collapse as evidence the building is unsafe. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick shared security footage of the incident on Sept. 4 during heavy rainfall in Washington. Trump later reposted the same clip, saying the center could no longer safely host visitors. “The entire building is in this kind of shape. People cannot be allowed to go into this building any longer,” Lutnick tweeted. “It must be closed and reconstructed, and a major fundraising effort must take place to cover the Kennedy Center’s operating expenses.” Adding, “Only President Trump can deliver the renovation on time and on budget, and only President Trump can raise the money to keep the Center out of bankruptcy.” View on Threads However, Lutnick shared the post on Sept. 14, along with photos of a chunk of ceiling measuring nearly 5 feet long and almost 4 feet wide. His timing seemed all too convenient. Now, new whistleblower allegations are putting the Kennedy Center’s closure under a brighter spotlight. In a New York Times report, former employees allege officials knew about the building’s leaks for years but stopped planned repairs months before citing the damage as a reason to close it. In a letter to Congress, their attorney included internal documents that they say show officials knew about the problems but delayed addressing them. Kennedy Center officials pushed back on the whistleblowers’ claims, saying safety remains its top priority. Executive Director Mattc said officials knew about roof leaks for years but not the extent. “The Kennedy Center has known for years that the roof overhang leaked,” Floca admitted in a statement to the outlet. “What we did not know until this summer was how far the damage had spread inside it.” He added that officials changed how they planned to handle the repairs rather than deciding the “work was unnecessary.” At first, a critic alluded to collusion, writing, “Of course…it’s common sense they are closing it because of Trumps ego.” Another asked, “Is this building going to have a tarp over? It’s name for two more years simply because ‘Trump’ isn’t on it??? Regarding Lutnick’s video, one person believes it’s “100% staged. Someone took a hammer to it from the crawl space. Also, why are we just now hearing about something that happened almost weeks ago?” The pile-on continued with a remark that read, “Not at all surprising. This might be the most pathetic thing done by the clowns in this administration. Honestly it’s really hard to rank the bullsh-t because everyone involved is pathetic in their own special way.” Another stated, “Trump is going to destroy it one way or another.” Doubts that inclement weather was to blame for the damage first surfaced on Sept. 6. At the time, detractors suggested the fallen debris would support his fight to rename and shutter the center. Trump, meanwhile, painted an even grimmer picture on Truth Social, claiming the venue was practically falling apart. He warned that people could have been killed if it stayed open. The emergency closure comes after courts blocked the administration from unilaterally renaming the center or making physical changes without notice. Ex-officio Kennedy board member Rep. Joyce Beatty voted against the Trump restoration. She revealed that he called her “dumb,” and berated her and the trustees in a virtual call after his latest court loss. She equested an emergency hearing in a Sept. 16 filing, arguing the closure undermines a previous court ruling forbidding the start of renovations — signaling yet another chapter in the Kennedy Center battle. Maria Shriver, Kennedy’s niece, shredded Trump’s “small minded” and “narcissistic” agenda. “It seems that this man will not rest until his name is permanently connected to the name of a great president, whose memory this building was dedicated to,” she said.  Outside, hundreds of protesters formed a human chain around the building. Meanwhile, Trump floated an even more dramatic possibility: tearing it down if his changes aren’t recognized. This adds to the chaos surrounding the Kennedy Center since Trump’s name went up, with its safety, repairs, and future now under fresh scrutiny.
