As the final days of the downtown Dallas Neiman Marcus flagship store approach, visitors are making special trips to document and remember a piece of the city’s history before it closes Sept. 30. The store at Main and Ervay has operated in downtown Dallas for more than a century. In recent days , shoppers, tourists and history enthusiasts have been stopping by to take photos, revisit memories and say goodbye to a landmark that has long been associated with the city’s identity. One of those visitors was Tiffany Schweikhart, who drove several hours to see the store before it closes. “I just didn’t want to let this moment go by without having some kind of pictorial history of it,” Schweikhart said. “I drove down because I knew Neiman Marcus was closing,” Schweikhart said. “I’ve never been to the flagship store before – and I’ve always wanted to.” Jarrell Johnson was also among those photographing the building. He said his aunt worked in the store’s bridal department for three decades. “I think now I read about 112 years at this location, 1618 Main Street. Yeah, I just decided to come down and just get my last little photos on the outside of the building and enjoyed it totally,” Johnson said. The downtown store has faced previous threats of closure and efforts to keep it operating, including work by city leaders to keep the flagship open through another Christmas season last year. But this summer brought confirmation that the location would close amid the bankruptcy of Neiman Marcus’ parent company, which includes Saks Fifth Avenue. Some of the retailer’s best-known features, including the Zodiac restaurant, are expected to transition to the company’s NorthPark location. Visitors from England, Darren Robinson and Penney Kilbey, said they did not realize they were visiting the downtown Neiman Marcus during its final days until learning about the closure. “It’s iconic – this shop really,” Robinson said. “I think it’s really sad – any long-time buildings that are closing down – I think it’s happening everywhere in the world,” Kilbey said. Those stopping by the store expect more people will visit before the doors close for good. “I love the history photos that they have posted along the windows,” Schweikhart said. For many, the final days of the downtown flagship offer one last chance to create a memory before the location becomes part of Dallas history. “To come through downtown Dallas and not have a Neiman Marcus here, you will miss it,” Johnson said.
