CHESTERTON, Ind. — A 19-year-old Valparaiso man died Thursday night after the motorcycle he was riding crashed on Interstate 94 near Chesterton, Indiana State Police said in a Friday news release. State police notified Matthew Lowenthal’s family at the scene. The crash was reported aro und 8:11 p.m. Thursday on Interstate 94 westbound about 2 miles east of the Chesterton exit. That’s about a 25-minute drive east of downtown Gary in northwest Indiana. Investigators with the a state police crash reconstruction team said Lowenthal and another motorcyclist were speeding west from the Michigan City area before the crash. The second motorcyclist, Luke Tilford, suffered serious injuries when an unknown vehicle hit him. Tilford had pulled his motorcycle onto the shoulder and was getting off the bike when the collision happened. Police said the driver of the unknown vehicle may have been trying to avoid the first crash and might not have realized the vehicle hit Tilford. Emergency crews took Tilford to a hospital for treatment. The driver of a 2024 Tesla passenger car also involved in the initial crash was not injured.
