Hundreds of people gathered downtown Friday evening to watch bike races and eat (and dress up as) pieces of pizza. Independent photographer Chris Volpe was on the scene. See above and below for his photos from the 11th annual A-1 Toyota Apizza Feast and New Haven Grand Prix, which also featured an attempt by the city to break the Guinness World Record for World’s Largest Pizza Costume Party. Riders hurtle down Chapel Street, Musicians from the East Rock Brass Band perform. Cameron Danesh-Pajou of New Haven and Alex Parkhurst of New York share a slice. Wells Kaysar, 10, of New Haven digs into his sausage pizza. Ahmed Hashim of Est Est Est Pizza pulls a fresh tomato pie from the oven. Heat leaders race down Chapel Street. Despite a great turnout, the final count was just below the existing record. Attendees dressed as slices of pizza gather for the pizza costume party.
