CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The newly selected Vice Chair of the CMS Board of Education has decided to remain in her role for now. That comes after Liz Monterrey Duvall sent an e-mail to other board members on Thursday, saying she didn’t want to serve as Vice Chair due to security concerns she has for herself and her family since the Tuesday, September 22 meeting. In a statement, she says in part, “I made this difficult decision (to remain in the Vice Chair role) in the interest of helping the board rebuild public trust, and to contribute to the stabilization of our service to our students, families and educators. My family and I will be taking additional safety measures in light of this decision. My hope is that the menacing messages stop and that we can all get back to supporting our continued student growth without distraction.” At that meeting, Monterrey Duvall was one of five board members who voted to fire CMS Superintendent Dr. Crystal Hill. At that same meeting, Monterrey Duvall also stopped the meeting, claiming a man inside the chamber was sending her threatening texts. The man was escorted out.
