A new restaurant, called The Old Post Office, from the restaurant group behind Spruce and The Village Pub, opens October 1 in Burlingame's old post office at 220 Park Road.It's a project that certainly flew under our radar, but not under the radar of Burlingame residents, who have been watching with anticipation as Bacchus Management Group — which also operates the popular Selby's in nearby Redwood City — has been renovating the 1940s-era Art Deco post office that has been out of use since 2014.The Old Post Office, which Bacchus tells the Chronicle is opening October 1, will feature prix fixe menus with options therein in the main dining room, and a more casual menu, including a burger and fries, in the adjacent cocktail lounge dubbed the Postmaster's Bar.The executive chef is Jonathan Granada, who came to Bacchus from Los Angeles, where he had worked with former French Laundry chef de cuisine Timothy Hollingsworth, now a celeb chef in his own right, at the now shuttered Otium. He's calling the menu "contemporary American" with some nods to Asia, Spain, and France.Dinner will be a $120 prix fixe that comes with laminated brioche rolls and a canapé, choice of first course and entree — the latter which may include grilled Maine lobster tail or a New York steak — and desserts from pastry chef Kyle Caporicci, including a "tipsy cake" laden with brandy cream and vanilla bean gelato. A $55 lunch prix fixe will be available as well.A signature dish, only six of which will be available each night by reservation, is a dry-aged rotisserie duck for two ($80), with a carved breast that that will get a sauce made table side with confit duck gizzards and liqueur. The legs will be prepared on a binchotan grill and come with a small salad, and the breast will come alongside a parsnip puree, freeze-dried blackberries, and olives.The new 220 Park Road, with the Old Post Office entrance center right, via Dostart Development CompanyBecause of historic preservation restrictions, many elements of the old post office have been preserved in the dining room of The Old Post Office, including a bank of brass PO boxes on one wall, the terrazzo floor, and a locked glass memo case — the key to which is long gone. Per the Chronicle, Bacchus's designer Stephen Brady worked with a preservation architecture firm on the project — which is part of the larger redevelopment of the property to include a six-story office complex behind the post office, from Dostart Development Company. That project included a laborious temporary moving of the entire historic post office structure in 2023 over about 120 feet, in order to construct a new underground parking garage.Tim Stannard of Bacchus tells the Chronicle that The Old Post Office is aiming for the same type of "accessible luxury" as their other restaurants, which he says are all "rooted in the communities that they’re in." "The Village Pub is the living room for Woodside. Spruce is the living room for Presidio Heights, and we wanted the Old Post Office to be that for Hillsborough and Burlingame," Stannard tells the paper.Bacchus also, last year, debuted the 7,000-square-foot Augustine at Santana Row in San Jose, and the also swanky La Connessa two years earlier in SF's Potrero Hill. ...read more read less
