(KRON) -- The Vallejo Police Department said an officer was driving Thursday on westbound on Interstate 80, near the Abernathy Road exit in Fairfield, when the officer noticed smoke coming from the car’s rear. “Upon observing the smoke, the officer immediately pulled over and exited the vehicle . After exiting, the officer observed smoke and flames coming from the rear area of the police vehicle. The officer then removed the firearms and other pertinent items from inside the vehicle,” according to Vallejo police. The Fairfield Fire Department responded to the scene, and crews extinguished the blaze.  “Units arrived to find a fully involved police car that was catching nearby vegetation on fire,” FFD said in a social media post. “Crews made a quick attack to limit the spread and placed the fire under control.” Vallejo police confirmed the officer was not injured in the incident. No other injuries were reported. The damaged police vehicle was later towed away. Investigators believe so far that the fire was started “by an electrical failure involving a control module located in the rear of the police vehicle. Road flares stored near the affected equipment also ignited during the fire.” Vallejo police is reviewing the equipment failure and the circumstances that led to the fire. ...read more read less
