ANTIOCH, Calif. (KRON) — Antioch police officers are getting some extra help when it comes to communicating with the people they serve. The Antioch Police Department recently began using new Axon 4 body cameras equipped with a two-way, live language translation feature. The translation feature is designed to allow officers and community members who speak different languages to communicate in real time. Starbucks closures to impact at least 13 Bay Area stores “We work in a very diverse climate. We come across people who speak a multitude of different languages," Carpenter said. "One of the most popular we come across is Spanish." During a demonstration, an Antioch Police Department employee spoke Spanish directly to Carpenter. The body camera translated her words into English, allowing Carpenter to respond and continue the conversation in real time. Carpenter demonstrated how the technology could be used during an investigation, including asking questions about where someone was last seen. “In this job, every second counts so we have to get enough information as we can to come to a conclusion and a solution to whatever problem we come across,” Carpenter said. The technology works with more than 50 different languages, according to Carpenter. For officers, Carpenter said the cameras provide the traditional benefit of recording interactions while also giving them another tool to communicate with people who may need assistance. Carpenter has been with the Antioch Police Department for seven years. Before joining law enforcement, he worked as an EMT. “I’ve always had a passion with engaging with people and helping the community, prior to law enforcement I worked as an EMT on an ambulance,” Carpenter said.
