After years of work, a multimillion-dollar project on Route 70 in South Jersey is nearly complete. In an update sent to NBC10 on Thursday, the New Jersey Department of Transportation said the $155.1 million Route 70, Route 38 to Cooper Avenue corridor and safety improvement project is expected to be completed this year. In 2022, NJDOT launched the project to improve gas and water mains, upgrade traffic signals at 27 intersections, replace or install four Dynamic Message Signs, improve drainage and sidewalks, and resurface approximately 9 miles of Route 70 between Route 38 in Cherry Hill and Cooper Avenue in Evesham. “The investment NJDOT is making will help improve travel times, relieve congestion, and increase safety on this key roadway through Camden County, and these improvements are expected to benefit more than motorists. Reconstructed sidewalks and concrete curbs will mean improved safety for pedestrians, cyclists and other vulnerable roadway users,” officials said. According to officials, work is complete in three of the five work zones, with work in the other two sections expected to be completed this fall, weather permitting. Final paving for Work Zone 4, as well as landscaping, is expected to be completed next spring. However, officials said additional main work was added to Work Zone 3, causing construction to take longer in that section than originally planned. Below is a breakdown of the work zones and what work is left to complete, per NJDOT: Work Zone #1: Route 41 Kings Highway (MP 3.66) to Grove / Haddonfield Intersection (MP 2.31) This section is essentially complete. The existing signals at the Grove Street/Haddonfield Road intersection will be removed and the new signals will be installed in early October. Work will be done overnight. Once the new signal is installed, this section will be complete. Work Zone #2: Route 295 (MP 5.07) to Route 41 Kings Highway (MP 3.66) – Complete Work Zone #3: Grove / Haddonfield Intersection (MP 2.31) to Route 38 (MP 0.0) All of the median restoration is complete. There are three traffic signals that will be completed in October at McClellan Avenue, South Cornell Avenue, and Garden State Boulevard. NJDOT said it is working to complete final paving for Work Zone 3 this fall, weather permitting. Work Zone #4: Route 295 (MP 5.07) to Cropwell Road (MP 7.67) All of the drainage work is complete. There are three traffic signals that will be completed in October at Spring Dale Road, Green Tree Road, and Marlkress Road. Intermediate paving will take place this fall where necessary, with final paving scheduled for next spring.
