EVANSVILLE, Ind. — Construction is complete on the third section of the I-69 Ohio River Crossing project in Evansville, state officials announced Friday. The $202 million project includes approach roads and three bridges that will provide construction access to the Ohio River for the future I-6 9 bridge connecting Evansville and Henderson, Kentucky. Work on Section 3 began in fall 2024 and was completed on time and on budget. “Less than two years ago, we stood in a farm field,” Gov. Mike Braun said. “Today, the approach bridges are complete and provide a direct path to the future I-69 bridge.” The approach roads and bridges were built in an area that is largely within a floodplain. They will provide crews with an all-weather route to transport equipment and materials to the river during construction of the new bridge. The roads and bridges will eventually open to regular traffic after the new I-69 bridge is completed. The contractor for Section 2 of the project, which includes the river crossing, is expected to be selected by the end of the year. Construction is expected to begin in spring 2027 and finish in 2031. Section 2 is a joint project between Indiana and Kentucky that will connect I-69 in Evansville with U.S. 60 in Henderson. It includes a new four-lane bridge across the Ohio River. The project also includes a Kentucky approach, an Indiana approach and four additional bridges in Indiana. Interchanges at U.S. 41 and U.S. 60 in Henderson and the I-69/U.S. 41 interchange in Evansville will also be modified or completed.
