New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill is calling for Lt. Governor Dale Caldwell to resign after a report accused him of sexually harassing a woman and of trying to secure a promotion for a state employee whom he was dating. The investigation began in May 2026 after Gov. Sherrill’s Chief Ethics Officer received an anonymous letter accusing Caldwell, 66, of acting inappropriately towards women. The State of New Jersey then hired the law firm Lowenstein Sandler to investigate Caldwell’s alleged misconduct. According to the firm’s report, Caldwell made a romantic advance toward the friend of a female staffer. After being turned down by the friend, Caldwell told the staffer, “You young women are looking for young sperm,” according to the report. The report states that the staffer changed the way she interacted with Caldwell at work, distanced herself from him and avoided traveling with him when possible. While Caldwell denied making the remark, the report did not find his denial credible. The report also accused Caldwell of bringing personal guests to ticketed events without advanced ethics clearance, payment or reimbursement, violating the Code of Conduct and the Uniform Ethics Code. Finally, the report determined that Caldwell tried multiple times to secure a promotion for a state employee he was in a romantic relationship with. According to the report, Caldwell used his state email account to ask that the employee receive a promotion and never disclosed he was in a relationship with the worker. Following the report, Gov. Sherrill released a statement on Thursday, Sept. 24, calling on Caldwell to resign. “Today, I’m announcing the conclusion and findings of an independent investigation into allegations regarding Lieutenant Governor Dale Caldwell. The investigation found that the Lieutenant Governor engaged in serious, repeated violations of state policy and failed to uphold the responsibilities of his office. I’m calling for his resignation and giving him until tomorrow to do so,” Sherrill wrote. “I hold everyone in my Administration to the highest ethical standard. We all have a duty to follow our state ethics and harassment policy and our Code of Conduct. Anyone who violates these will be held accountable.” Caldwell, a Democrat, was elected alongside Gov. Sherrill, also a Democrat, last year, and took office in January. He is the first man to serve as New Jersey’s lieutenant governor and also serves as New Jersey’s secretary of state.
