PJ’s Coffee will open a new Uptown New Orleans location this fall, returning the coffee chain to Maple Street nearly five decades after the company was founded in the neighborhood.
The New Orleans-based brand plans to open an approximately 1,600-square-foot coffee shop at 7700 Maple St., between Carrollton Avenue and Broadway Street. The location is a few blocks from where founder Phyllis Jordan opened the first PJ’s Coffee Tea Co. in 1978.
The new shop will feature indoor seating, an outdoor patio and an updated design, according to the company. PJ’s did not provide a specific opening date.
The return comes as PJ’s has expanded from its New Orleans origins to nearly 200 locations in the U.S. and internationally. The company currently has four international locations.
“We’re excited to bring PJ’s Coffee back to where it all started,” said Paul, Steven and Scott Ballard, brothers and co-founders of Ballard Brands. “Maple Street means a great deal to the PJ’s Coffee community, and we’re looking forward to being part of the neighborhood again.”
The Maple Street shop will serve the brand’s hot, iced and frozen coffee drinks, including its Original Cold Brew, along with beignets, breakfast pastries and other cafe offerings.
Jordan founded PJ’s in 1978 with a focus on Arabica coffee beans and roasting techniques. Her cold-drip process became the basis for the company’s Original Cold Brew, which remains part of its menu.
New Orleans natives Paul, Steven and Scott Ballard acquired PJ’s Coffee in 2008. The company has since expanded its franchise footprint in the U.S. and abroad while maintaining its headquarters and brand identity in the New Orleans area.
The company said the new Maple Street location is intended to combine elements of its current store design with references to the neighborhood where the brand began.
