In recognition of Hunger Action Month this September, Miami-Dade County Commissioner Vicki L. Lopez is thanking the community organizations, local businesses, and volunteers who have worked alongside her office throughout the year to help provide food and meals to families and seniors across Distr ict 5. Since being appointed to the County Commission in November, Commissioner Lopez and her office, together with their community partners, have helped deliver more than 5,000 meals and groceries to residents in need. While September brings greater attention to food insecurity, this work continues year-round. These efforts would not be possible without the volunteers who give their time and the organizations that consistently step up to serve their neighbors. Commissioner Lopez has also made it a priority to recognize the people working behind the scenes to put food on their neighbors’ tables. Today she presented Certificates of Appreciation to Mitzvah Kitchen Miami and Pressed Miami Brickell Kosher Deli for their continued service to the community and their efforts to help those experiencing food insecurity. “It is always striking to see just how much need exists right here in our own community,” said Commissioner Vicki L. Lopez. “You meet seniors living on fixed incomes and families who are working hard but still struggling with the cost of groceries and everyday necessities. Fortunately, you also see so many people willing to step up and help. I am incredibly grateful for every organization, business, and volunteer who has partnered with us and continues to show up for our neighbors with so much care and compassion.” Food insecurity continues to affect residents across Miami-Dade, including working families and older adults who may be balancing the cost of groceries with housing, medication, utilities, and other essential expenses. For many, even a small increase in everyday costs can make it more difficult to consistently put nutritious food on the table. “At Mitzvah Kitchen, we see every week that hunger affects real families and seniors right here in our community,” said Rabbi Yossi Harlig of Mitzvah Kitchen Miami. “We’re grateful to Commissioner Vicki L. Lopez for recognizing this need and working alongside us to make sure our neighbors are cared for with dignity and compassion. We’re also deeply grateful to the hundreds of volunteers who have helped us prepare and provide more than 25,000 meals to those in need.” Looking ahead to the holiday season, Commissioner Lopez is planning several additional food distributions for families and seniors across the district.
