Commuters hoping to travel to Philadelphia on Monday were hit with significant delays as, officials with the FAA said, an equipment outage caused a ground stop at the Philadelphia International Airport. According to the FAA, as of about 9:48 a.m., a ground stop was put in place at the Philade lphia International Airport for flights coming into the airport. Outgoing flights were delayed about 45 minutes due to the ground stop, the FAA said. In an update, FAA officials said that the equipment issue is impacting Philadelphia International Airport, as well as Teterboro and Newark Liberty International airports. The issues, officials said, were due to Philadelphia TRACON — which is a facility where traffic controllers guide aircraft approaching and departing airports. Later in the day, LaGuardia Airport and John F. Kennedy International Airport were also impacted by the equipment outages. In an afternoon update, FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford said the incident happened because of a severed fiber cable in New Jersey and repairs were expected to take up to 13 hours. “We lost the primary circuit. This is one of the old L3 Verizon circuits. It’s part of our obsolescence replacement plan. Unfortunately, that circuit failed today. And when it went to flip into the backup, we discovered that the backup fiber had a break, and that fiber break is probably 13 hours to repair,” said Bedford. He said that the cut is “massive,” and is “600 feet, somewhere between New Brunswick, New Jersey, and Newark, New Jersey.” As of about 2 p.m., the outage was expected to last until, at least, 3 p.m. Officials said real-time airport information can be found here.
