A memorial has been set up in the East Village, where a 15-year-old girl was killed Friday night while riding on the front of her bike with a friend. Daria Serkov was riding on a Citi Bike with a friend when the two teens were struck by a garbage truck. The crash happened near the corner of 14th Street and First Avenue. A vigil was held Saturday night to remember the 15-year-old, who was a daughter, a sister, and a friend to many. “We’re all very close and the kids are going to have a hard time,” Chris Jansen, a longtime family friend, said Saturday. She was with Serkov’s parents Friday night when they got the tragic call from the hospital. “All our families were all together, just having Mexican night and tacos and tequila and playing games. And then we got the call around 10… 10:30, something like that,” she said. Surveillance video obtained by News 4 showed how the crash unfolded. The two teenagers can be seen on the bike, with Serkov appearing to be riding on a basket attached to the handle bars. They come down the street then collide with the commercial truck. The driver was questioned by police but not taken into custody. “The police went and tried to shake her, but she wasn’t responsive,” a witness said Friday. “And then, a bunch of police came in. They pulled her and then they pulled that person out and they gave that person CPR (for) about 10 minutes. There was no response.” (Image: NBC New York) Police said the 57-year-old truck driver was turning right onto First Avenue and hit the girls as they were riding in the crosswalk. The bike ended up pinned underneath the truck, which is used by Hydro Excavations, according to its company, Badger Infrastructure Solutions. Police said the 16-year-old operating the bike was hurt but is expected to survive. “Just being at the hospital with our friend Irena, the mom, and Greta, and going through that whole process last night was like a front row seat to an awful, just an awful experience,” Jansen said. Serkov was a twin sister and a beloved friend to her classmates. Her unexpected death — unbearable for those at the vigil — who are too heartbroken to speak.
