I went for a nike ride on Saturday morning, my first in quite some time. I went through Olmos Park. If you aren’t familiar with the area, the park is located in an affluent area of San Antonio just north of downtown. In the past when weather damages trees or blocks paths and sidewalks, it is generally addressed immediately. Unfortunately, throughout the park there were uprooted trees and broken branches from a major storm that left thousands without power two weeks ago. A few days after the storm, members of the San Antonio Spurs Sports Entertainment went into the community to help in the clean up efforts that stymied the city. Per a Spurs press release: “SSE employees volunteered alongside House of Neighborly Service for a community cleanup for San Antonio residents impacted by last week’s storm. The effort focused on one of the hardest-hit neighborhoods on the city’s Westside, where employees helped remove debris from properties and provided additional support as families begin the recovery process.” I recently spoke with a representative from Teague’s Tree Service here in town. Their normal business include one Saturday a month to assess tree conditions. He said ever since the storm they had been working every Saturday. The clean up efforts as well as trimming and removal has been a huge undertaking. The Spurs, always known for their community service, immediately had volunteers helping in communities where hiring a service can be a budgetary concern. Welcome to the Thread.
