SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- A large industrial property along San Francisco’s central waterfront could become the site of a new artificial intelligence data center, as city officials consider a proposed moratorium on new data centers. A group of San Francisco residents has launched a petition opposin g a potential data center at 1215 Michigan Street. The push comes after Nesto Park Capital listed an “NPC Flagship Data Center — San Francisco” as “in development” on its website. Clare Chua, a Bay Area native who moved to San Francisco about a year ago, is a volunteer with the Party for Socialism and Liberation, the group behind the petition. “The petition is very much a voice for the people where we're not feeling very heard,” Chua said. “The wealthy are deciding what happens and how the city is run, but the working people do need a voice, and the petition is the start of that voice.” KRON4 reached out to Nestory Park Capital and the San Francisco Office of Economic and Workforce Development for comment but did not hear back in time for this report. The current property owner is listed as RP Stagg and Company LLC. No plans for a data center appear to have been filed with the city. Still, Chua said the group wanted to get ahead of a potential project. “At the end of the day, it's working people who foot the bill for data centers,” Chua said. “And that can be through the electricity bills that are multiplying, that could be through the contaminated water.” Some San Francisco leaders are also calling for a moratorium on data centers, including District 10 Supervisor Shamann Walton, whose district includes the potential site. If approved, the proposed ordinance would pause approval of new data centers for 45 days while the city studies their potential long-term impacts. Chua said she believes there is public opposition to data centers being built in communities. She cited a Public Policy Institute of California survey that found about 73% of California adults opposed data centers being built in their communities.
