SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Gunfire injured a South Bend police officer and a woman at a retail and dining area near Notre Dame Stadium just as the Fighting Irish game against Michigan State began on Saturday night, police said. South Bend Police Department did not name the officer or the woman inju red, and the shooter remained at large after the game ended with a victory for the Irish, 27-10. The shooting happened near Eddy Street and Angela Boulevard, an intersection on the edge of the Eddy Street Commons urban development. Beforehand, Notre Dame police told South Bend officers that a man was pointing a gun at people. Police found a man matching the description at the south end of the urban development, but he was not armed. While about 20 South Bend officers were in the area responding to that call from Notre Dame police, a single gunshot rang out. Police found a woman with a wound to her leg that was not believed to be life-threatening. An ambulance took her to the hospital. South Bend Police Chief Scott Ruszkowski said a ricocheted bullet injured the officer during the gunfire. The officer received treatment at the scene for an injury that was not believed to be life-threatening. Ruszkowski said some sort of fight broke out at a bar, leading to the shot. A third person was injured during the fight, but not by the gunfire, the chief said. The Notre Dame Alert Emergency System issued a warning after the gunman was last seen on the south edge of the campus. University officials immediately ordered fans inside the stadium to remain there, while others on campus were told to shelter in place as police searched the area. Authorities described the suspect as a heavy-set male wearing blue shorts, a black shirt, and one white shoe. Officers from South Bend, Notre Dame, and the St. Joseph County Police Department worked to secure the area and the campus. Police asked the public to avoid the area and follow safety instructions.
