MOSS LANDING, Calif. (KRON) -- A new fire ignited at the Moss Landing Power Plant in Monterey County Friday morning and officials are ordering nearby residents to "go indoors immediately." Firefighters with North County Fire Protection District are responding to the blaze, and flames are burning li thium ion batteries in one of the plant's battery energy storage facilities, officials said. The sheriff's office issued a shelter-in-place order for residents who live within 1/3 of a mile from 7301 Highway 1. NCFPD said the order was issued "due to smoke and potential hazardous materials associated with the fire. Remain inside until further notice. Do not go outside to observe the fire or smoke." California Highway Patrol officers closed Dolan Road, however, Highway 1 remains open. The Governor's Office Emergency Services' Hazardous Materials Spill Report states that the blaze broke out at 6:15 a.m. Friday and sent "hazardous chemicals" into the air. Flames are burning in the footprint of a prior fire in January. "According to units on scene, the involved structure contains 1,000 lithium ion batteries within it, but not all of the batteries are actively burning," the report states. Employees were evacuated from the power plant and no injuries have been reported. ‘Busy brothel’ at Cupertino spa raided U.S. Rep. Jimmy Panetta wrote on X at 9:40 a.m., "I’m closely monitoring the fire that broke out this morning in Moss Landing and am in active communication with firefighters, first responders, the battery storage facility, and EPA officials on the ground for updates. As we await further details, we will ensure that this battery storage facility addresses this emergency as soon as possible, and cooperates fully and openly with local authorities to keep our communities safe." Lithium batteries stacked inside a building caught fire, and flames spread from one battery to another, county supervisors said. The batteries burned for days. Following January's fire, Monterey County Supervisor Glenn Church explained, "The reason Moss Landing is now a site for battery storage facilities dates to the 1940s. When (PGE) built the Moss Landing Power Plant in 1949, it quickly became the largest power plant on the West Coast. It was that elaborate electrical infrastructure that prompted Vistra to settle on Moss Landing as the site for what would be the largest BESS (Battery Energy Storage Systems) facility in the world. In 2019 and 2020, three permits were granted for two BESS facilities at Moss Landing. One is operated by Vistra with LG batteries. The other is operated by PGE with Tesla batteries."
