A new public artwork is bringing color to the recently opened Lake Hefner Golf Club clubhouse. Encuentro, a glass installation by artists Malina Cipleu and Ana Maria Nava, was installed Sept. 9 along the stairway leading to Maxwell’s on the Lake, the clubhouse’s second-floor restaurant. T he work features layers of concentric glass forms that intersect and overlap across the stairwell walls. Its design was inspired by patterns created by agricultural fields viewed from above. Photo by Kenny Yo. “Encuentro means meeting, encounter, or gathering, and that idea of connection is at the heart of the piece,” Cipleu said. “The overlapping forms suggest individual elements coming together to create something larger.” Cipleu, who grew up in Romania and is now based in Austin, and Miami-based Nava have more than 20 years of combined experience creating public art. Encuentro is their first public art commission with the City of Oklahoma City. The artwork is part of the new 18,000-square-foot Lake Hefner Golf Club clubhouse, which opened in March. The $11.8 million facility was funded through Oklahoma City’s Better Streets, Safer City 2017 General Obligation Bond program. Photo by Kenny Yo. “We love that the artwork now lives in a place designed to bring people together,” Nava said. The $59,000 artwork was funded through Oklahoma City’s 1% for Art ordinance, which sets aside 1% of construction budgets for qualifying City buildings, parks and trails for public art. Visitors do not have to be golfers to see the installation or visit Maxwell’s. The clubhouse, 4491 S. Lake Hefner Drive, is open to the public from sunrise to sunset. Lake Hefner Golf Club includes two 18-hole courses, a three-hole academy course and a driving range. It is one of five municipal golf courses owned by the City of Oklahoma City and operated through Oklahoma City Parks Recreation.
