More than 5,000 gallons of diesel fuel were leaked from a data center’s storage tank into a tributary of the Hackensack River, New Jersey officials said. The leak was first reported on Friday and came from a tank belonging to the Equinix Data Center, according to a statement from the company. A s of Monday, it was not clear exactly how many gallons of fuel had gotten into Anderson Creek, located in the south end of Secaucus, the state’s Department of Environmental Protection said. “This should never have happened, and any such incident is extremely upsetting, to say the least,” Secaucus Mayor Michael Gonnelli said in a statement to NBC New York. “I am not an environmental expert, but I know that incidents such as these don’t have a good outcome if they are not taken care of properly.” Gonnelli said when the company discovered the leak, the city’s fire department was notified, as were state and federal authorities, which is required by law. In turn, the fire department contacted NJDEP and the Hudson Regional Health Commission.” “NJDEP has assured us that because it was reported immediately and containment and clean-up crews started work right away, the diesel was contained in the creek and did not make it to the Hackensack River,” said Gonnelli. Gonnelli noted that the leak seemed to have been caused by a “computer glitch.” The town administration was working with the NJDEP and the EPA to make sure the situation gets contained. It is estimated that about 3,500 gallons had been recovered so far.
