Students at Brentwood’s Liberty High School on Monday were mourning two classmates killed in a crash over the weekend as the California Highway Patrol continued to investigate what led to the collision. Police responded just after midnight Sunday to the crash on Deer Valley Road near Balfour Ro ad on the Antioch-Brentwood border. Investigators said three teens were in a silver Infinity when they collided with a white BMW. Two teenagers in the Infinity – both Liberty High School seniors – died at the scene. Another student was seriously injured and taken to the hospital. The driver of the BMW was also injured. It wasn’t immediately known what led up to the crash. Law enforcement did have a recent interaction with the BMW. The East Bay Regional Park District Police Department told NBC Bay Area the BMW fled from park police during a traffic stop on August 7 and a warrant was issued on it. In a social media post, the mother said she knew something was wrong when her son wouldn’t answer his phone. She and her husband tracked his location and went looking for him only to arrive at the crash scene and learn he had died. She said their hearts are shattered and asked those who knew their son to share a memory of the teen. Students who spoke with NBC Bay Area remembered their classmates as kind and funny. Some of the teens’ closest friends went out to the crash scene Monday to light a candle and say a prayer. One student described one of the teens who died as a good, religious friend who had been helping him become a better Catholic. Another recalled one of the students who survived as a kind person whom she remembered for the pig he raised through FFA. “It’s truly, like, really sad to think about some kids got their lives taken so young, when they were just about to start their life and be outside of high school,” Liberty High School student Hannah Jorstad said. “And I think that it truly affects us because it really shows us how fast our lives can go and how we really need to appreciate the people around us and be kind to the people around us.” Liberty High School said counseling services would be available Monday for students dealing with grief following the crash. “With deep sadness, we share that two Liberty High School students passed away and another student was injured in a tragic car accident Saturday night,” Principal Efa Huckaby said in a message to the school community. “Our hearts are with their families, friends, classmates, teammates, and everyone affected by this tragedy.
