WARREN COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) — A driver fleeing a traffic stop was injured after being shot by a sheriff’s deputy at the end of a vehicle and foot pursuit in southern Indiana Sunday evening. Indiana State Police say the incident unfolded around 6:30 p.m. when a Benton County Sheriff’s Of fice deputy tried to pull over a 2009 Infiniti G37 for a traffic violation on U.S. 41 near County Road 400 South in Benton County near Boswell. The Infiniti did not stop and sped south on U.S. 41. The chase continued on U.S. 41 before moving through multiple county roads and ending up in Warren County. The car stopped near County Road 650 North, and the driver proceeded to run into a field. State police say at some point, the driver “reportedly made indications that he was armed with a weapon.” The deputy tried to tase the driver, but failed. After the driver “disobeyed commands and advanced toward the deputy,” the deputy fired his gun. The driver was hit at least once. Officers provided medical aid to the driver until EMS arrived. The driver was eventually taken to a hospital in Indianapolis for treatment. State police did not provide the person’s condition. The investigation is ongoing, state police say; details from the investigation will eventually be submitted to the Warren County Prosecutor’s Office for further review.
