San Francisco Opera season-opening performance was canceled after orchestra musicians announced they were going on strike on Saturday. The orchestra musicians said their contract expired on July 31 after months of negotiations. “A strike is not something we take lightly, and we are deeply so rry to everyone who planned to spend this evening at the opera,” the San Francisco Opera Orchestra wrote. According to the musicians, management proposed a 26% pay cut and later proposed a 20% cut. The musicians also argued that the Opera is “not a company in trouble”. Sunday’s free Public Opera in the Park performances were also canceled due to the strike. In response to the strike, San Francisco Opera General Director Matthew Shilvock said, “I am very disappointed that the Orchestra has chosen to strike the opening of our 104th season, canceling the opening performance and the beloved Opera in the Park concert, rather than continuing to engage in dialogue at the negotiating table.” The San Francisco Opera gave those with tickets the following options: The ticket’s value may be held on their accounts to purchase tickets for an upcoming performance in the 2026–27 season.
