Federal investigators are seeking six years' worth of records related to Gavin Newsom's travel, funding, and personal expenditures in an expanding criminal probe. Communications involving Rebecca Prowda — Newsom’s chief protocol officer and wife to Daniel Lurie — are among the requested files. As the Standard reports, the subpoenas in question were issued earlier this month and cover a span of six years. The requests include materials related to the nonprofit California State Protocol Foundation, which underwrites Newsom's international travel, and correspondence between an inner circle of Newsom aides, advisers, and associates.That includes communications from Rebecca Prowda, who oversees Newsom's foreign travel. Wife to San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie, Prowda declined to comment when reached by the Standard. We now have clarity on the documents being targeted by the ongoing federal investigation, which Newsom first acknowledged was underway in June, as SFist previously reported. Per a subpoena signed by Assistant US Attorney Michael D. Anderson, the requests concern "a criminal investigation pending in the Eastern District of California.”Newsom's office has decried the federal probe as a bad-faith witch hunt aimed at derailing his potential future run for president while stressing that no crimes have been committed to merit the investigation. In a statement, Newsom's office lambasted the probe as a vindictive move by the Trump administration:“Governor Newsom went after the king — and as he warned in June, the tyrant is now coming after everyone around him. This is what Donald Trump does to his enemies: investigate first, hunt for a crime that doesn’t exist second. It’s deeply upsetting to see innocent staff, friends, and family have their names dragged through the mud just because they’re associated with the Governor.”As the situation stands, records obtained via this latest crop of subpoenas will be presented to a grand jury, who will in turn decide whether the evidence warrants an indictment.Per the Standard, being named in a subpoena "does not indicate that someone is the subject of the investigation or that the government believes they have done anything wrong."
