A commemoration at the Presidio honoring those who lost their lives in the Sept. 11 attacks brought together the Mayor’s Office, the San Francisco Giants and the San Francisco Interfaith Council. The event was organized by the Heart Armor Foundation for Veterans Health. Mayor Daniel Lurie, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and San Francisco Fire Department Chief Dean Crispen delivered remarks as the city marked 25 years since the attacks. Earlier Friday morning, a remembrance ceremony was held at the San Francisco Fire Department’s Public Safety Building. As in years past, the ceremony honored those killed in the attacks, including 343 New York firefighters and eight EMS providers. At 6:59 a.m., the time the South Tower of the World Trade Center collapsed, bells will ring in three sets of three chimes to signify “the last alarm.” The names of the first responders killed in the attacks were read. Local and state leaders also attended. The Bay Area is also remembering the passengers of United Flight 93, including Mark Bingham. Bingham, 31, was traveling from his New York office to his San Francisco office on the day of the attacks when terrorists took over the plane. Bingham and other passengers stormed the cockpit before the plane crashed into a field in Pennsylvania.
