In an effort to encourage “traditional” families, the Trump administration wants to pay  married, stay-at-home parents with money from the Child Care and Development Fund, which was established in 1990 as a way to help parents—both single and married— pay for childcare so they could go back to work. “It’s not the 1950s in America,” said Murray in a statement. “Our government shouldn’t punish people for being single parents or choosing not to marry. … Raiding an underfunded program solely to score culture war points is not pro-family—it’s a wasteful grift that I will fight every step of the way.”  CM Bob Kettle’s (still) pissed at Mayor Wilson. Seattle City Council Member Bob Kettle wrote a public letter to Mayor Katie Wilson demanding to know why Wilson asked SPD Chief Shon Barnes to resign after the Bite of Seattle shooting. Barnes, who didn’t live in Seattle full-time and was hired by former Mayor Bruce Harrell, stepped down in July. CM Kettle’s letter does not acknowledge that hundreds of pages of internal messages suggest that, as Publicola reported, “the primary reason for the delay in information, as well as almost all of the delay in holding a press conference that night, was that SPD delayed the release of information repeatedly.” As Sutton would say: Let the mouse go. Trump admitted yesterday that the war likely won’t end before November’s midterms. Ooooh, but just think about that juicy $5,000!!!!!! In other the Future Is Fucked news, August was the hottest month ever recorded on Earth! El Niño is a factor, but experts say “our relentless burning of fossil fuels” is also a significant driver, especially because climate change exacerbates El Niño. One scientist added, “This summer has really been exceptional. We’ve seen records that existed for close to 100 years be broken, in the U.S. in particular.” U! S! A! U! S! A! U! S! A! According to the World Meteorological Organization, there’s a near 100 percent likelihood El Niño will persist through February 2027, significantly altering “rainfall and temperature patterns worldwide and fuel extreme weather.” We are the world. ICE activity at Boeing Field has “exploded,” according to Guadalupe Gonzalez, a member of La Resistencia. The Seattle Times reported that during one week in August, “authorities boarded roughly 400 people on ICE flights leaving Boeing Field.” It is believed they were taken to other facilities in the country, but, as the story points out, when people are “sent away on ICE planes, their loved ones and their lawyers are often left in the dark about what’s happening and why.” ICE’s contract with the GEO Group, which owns the Tacoma facility, ends in late October, though it’s unclear if the uptick of transfers is related. As KUOW reported in August, ICE is looking to buy “turn-key detention facilities in several states.” The Tacoma facility meets their requirements, but it’s unclear if they’re interested.
