Former Mayor Rudy Giuliani issued a scathing statement one day after New York City released nearly 200,000 documents related to post-9/11 air quality and health risks, suggesting city officials at the time knew of the potential environmental dangers in the days after the attacks. The documents m ade public Tuesday include the contents of 68 boxes city officials said were located only recently in a Department of Environmental Protection office. They also contain records the Giuliani administration sent for archival, and documents the city’s law department had related to 7 World Trade Center, the building where Giuliani positioned the city’s emergency “bunker,” and its ultimate collapse. Mayor Zohran Mamdani, when announcing the release of some 170,000 documents through an online city portal, said people got sick after 9/11 because the leaders they trusted lied and told them it was safe to breathe in toxic air. Through a spokesperson, Giuliani said the terrorists behind the attacks are “100 percent responsible” for all of the “suffering and illness” New Yorkers suffered. He also pointed fingers at the EPA, who he said declared air samples were safe. “It is a shame that Mayor Mamdani is now attempting to score cheap partisan political points by seeming to blame local officials who rushed to the scene, rather than radical Islam, for September 11,” Giuliani’s spokesperson, Ted Goodman, shared on Wednesday. Mamdani’s office did not directly respond to Giuliani’s statement but pointed back to comments he made on Tuesday morning when asked if Giuliani should skip Friday’s memorial. “I think that the focus of memorial services should be on the New Yorkers who were killed that day, their families, survivors, the first responders.
