A man allegedly posing as a professional basketball player drove away from a Savannah hotel in a $90,000 BMW after presenting valet workers with a ticket for the luxury SUV. The Savannah Police Department is asking the public to help identify a man captured in surveillance images at the Hyatt Re gency Savannah. Authorities described him as a Black man between 20 and 30 years old. Savannah police records show someone reported the BMW X5 stolen Aug. 14 from the Hyatt Regency Savannah at 2 W. Bay St. Investigators said the suspect entered the hotel lobby around 12:30 a.m. after first returning to a white Audi to collect his belongings. He allegedly claimed to be a professional basketball player and told workers he had multiple vehicles at the hotel. The valet staff told investigators that each ticket corresponds to a specific vehicle. Surveillance footage reportedly showed the man presenting the ticket before getting into the BMW and driving away.  The vehicle belonged to a dealership and had been provided to hotel guest Sabrina Preston as a loaner. Savannah police then contacted authorities there and requested that the BMW be entered into state and national stolen-vehicle databases. Investigators also discovered that a white 2025 Audi A5 associated with the suspect had been reported stolen the previous day. Savannah police found the approximately $30,000 vehicle unlocked inside the Hyatt’s parking garage with no obvious exterior damage.  The New York Post reported the BMW case was one of several August incidents involving valet services at downtown Savannah hotels, according to police records. In another case, a black 2019 Toyota C-HR disappeared from a Fairfield Inn after someone used a vehicle retrieval code hours before the hotel guest said she had sent it. Police also found that the vehicle’s key was missing from the valet lockbox.  The Hyatt Regency Savannah told Atlanta Black Star that it responded to the incident and is working with its third-party valet operator to improve security measures. “The safety and security of our guests and colleagues are always top priorities,” Hyatt Regency Savannah General Manager Todd Costin said. “We are aware of this incident and took immediate action to care for the impacted guest and provide assistance in response to this situation.” Costin said the hotel continues to work with the valet operator on “enhanced security measures” and directed additional questions to local authorities.  Many people on social media couldn’t believe that the man was able to get the car from valet. “Committing crimes in 4K is crazy,” one user said. Ain’t no way y’all let this guy here fool y’all into thinking he was an NBA player,” another said. Others compared the man to Daejon Love, who pretended to be an NFL player to scam women. “Da’jon Love walked so these newbies can run.” one person commented. Savannah police have not announced an arrest and are asking anyone who recognizes the suspect to contact investigators.
