ANDERSON, Ind. (WRTV) -- A racial slur and obscene graffiti were found Thursday night outside the home of an Anderson City Council member.Tamie Dixon-Tatum discovered the N-word and vulgar drawings painted in an oil-based substa nce on the street near her father Ollie Dixon's house. While the family remains unsure of the motive, they said they will not be intimidated.When my headlights hit the streets, that's when I saw the vulgar language on the ground so I immediately called my dad, and was like, hey you need to come outside, Dixon-Tatum said. Dixon, who built the home 50 years ago, said he has never seen such an incident happen there before.Dixon-Tatum, a Democrat, is currently challenging Republican incumbent Mike Gaskill for a seat in the Indiana Senate. She noted that her campaign signs have recently disappeared from her fathers yard and business, as well as other locations around town.Dixon was also recently elected president of the Madison County branch of the NAACP. He said the message is especially troubling because his family frequently visits the home.I have children and grandchildren that be been in and out, and I guess I was hoping that bigotry and racism has vanished, but it is still alive, he said.Dixon-Tatum said the incident serves as a reminder that hate cannot erase the progress Black people have made over generations.Let's figure this out. Let's sit down, and break bread. Let's do things so we can develop empathy and compassion for one another, she said.Anderson police are investigating the incident as a hate crime and searching for security footage from the area. Dixon said he wants those responsible to be held accountable.They ought to be ashamed of themselves, and I hope they're caught and I hope they get some jail time out of it.
