A man armed with a machete was shot and killed by Garland police officers early Monday morning, after authorities say he ignored commands to drop the weapon, resisted less-lethal efforts and charged toward officers. The shooting happened near the intersection of Broadway Boulevard and Colonel Dri ve. According to Garland police spokesperson Matt Pesta, officers had responded about an hour earlier at 2:15 a.m. to a report of a man carrying a machete near a gas station in the 3000 block of Broadway Boulevard. Officers searched the area but were unable to locate anyone matching the description. A second 911 call came in around 3:20 a.m. reporting a man with a large machete in the same general area. Police said the description matched the individual reported in the earlier call. When officers arrived, they found the man and spent between 15 to 25 minutes attempting to de-escalate the situation and convince him to drop the weapon, Pesta said. At one point, officers retreated into the roadway as the man advanced toward them while still holding the machete. Police said officers deployed a taser, but it had no effect. Investigators said the man then continued moving toward officers while swinging the machete. Several officers then fired their weapons, according to police. “There were a lot of resources here, trying to negotiate with this man to have a different outcome,” Pesta said. “All of our Garland police officers are trained in mental health de-escalation techniques. And they were at full force trying to utilize that. They tried to utilize less than lethal force, and all of that had no effect. He didn’t adhere to our commands, and he advanced our officers, and they had no choice. He charged at the officers.” Once the man was no longer considered a threat, officers and paramedics provided life-saving measures at the scene. The man was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police have not released the man’s name or age. Pesta said investigators are waiting to notify relatives before releasing identifying information. No officers were injured during the confrontation, and police said the man did not injure anyone before the shooting. Because Monday is Labor Day and schools are closed, officials said nearby South Garland High School and other schools along the corridor were not affected by the roadway closure. Police also noted that fewer people were on the roads during the holiday morning than would typically be expected on a weekday. The shooting remains under investigation. Garland police detectives are reviewing officer body-camera footage, surveillance video from nearby businesses and other evidence. The Dallas County District Attorney’s Office Public Integrity Unit is conducting an independent investigation, while the department’s Professional Standards Unit is also reviewing the incident. As is standard procedure, the officers involved have been placed on administrative leave. The investigation unfolded as Garland hosted its annual Labor Day parade just miles away. Police said numerous officers assigned to parade duties were redirected to assist with the shooting investigation and manage the large crime scene along Broadway Boulevard.
