The Nepalese Society of Texas will be holding a vigil for the victims of the recent deadly flood in Nepal. The vigil will take place on Monday, Sept. 7, at 8 p.m. at the Nepali Cultural and Spiritual Center in Euless. More than 1,300 people have now died following the Aug. 26 flooding and muds lide, according to the Nepal Disaster Agency. Just shy of 5,000 people remain missing, including 589 foreign nationals. Four of the missing individuals come from North Texas. A husband and wife from Plano are among the thousands of people missing after a catastrophic landslide. Deepak and Madhu Ahuja, longtime Plano neighbors and business owners who have been married for 34 years, were in the area for a religious journey to Mount Kailash. Their family is now desperately trying to find them while holding out hope that they survived. Sushil Ahuja believes his older brother, Deepak, and sister-in-law, Madhu, were inside a building when a massive wall of floodwater hit. Surveillance video from the Tibetan side of the China-Nepal border captured the destruction. Another couple, Raghu Rajan and Archana Suresh, is also missing. The longtime Murphy residents, who have been married for 25 years, were expected to cross the China-Nepal border when the floods hit. Their phones last pinged that morning near a bridge that washed away. Dallas-based volunteer nonprofit Texans on Mission sent a team to Nepal to help after floods devastated the community. A small team of five volunteers helped with immediate needs like food, cookware, and water purification equipment to filter water. Texans on Mission told NBC 5 they planned to travel with at least 100 filters for villages without power. It also had more advanced filter equipment to help locals rebuild after the massive flood.
