A mountain lion sighting near Fell and Baker Saturday night prompted a big response. On Sunday, Animal Care and Control said the threat appears to be over; however, authorities said there was an unconfirmed mountain lion sighting on Sunday. Peter Tira with the California Department of Fish and Wi ldlife says they were among those called in on Saturday, but never actually saw a mountain lion. They monitored the tree and checked back again Sunday morning. Tira says it does not mean there was not a lion, as one was spotted in the Pac Heights area in January, captured and released back into the wild. “They typically come from the coast, from the Peninsula where there is a good population of lions and they can move up through the Peninsula up into wild habit, the wilder natural habitat, if you look at the map, the Panhandle is kind of connected to Golden Gate Park,” Tira said. He says it’s impossible to say where it went but the panhandle is connected to a lot of habitats leading all the way to the coast. So, the best-case scenario is that it follows the same path back.
