Two people are in custody after at least one of them stabbed a victim during a fight on I-476 and led police on a chase that resulted in an officer-involved crash and a lockdown at Villanova University, investigators said. The incident began on Sunday, Sept. 6, at 5:35 p.m. in the southbound lane s of the Blue Route approaching Exit 13 in the Radnor Township and Lower Merion Township area, according to officials. Law enforcement sources told NBC10 two people inside a U-Haul truck were involved in a fight with a person inside a dark-colored Mercedes Benz. One of the men in the truck then pulled out a knife and stabbed the victim in the stomach, according to witnesses. Pennsylvania State Police responded to the scene and chased the suspects after they drove away, officials said. Lower Merion Township police officers also joined the pursuit. During the chase, a Lower Merion police officer was involved in a crash on Pennswood Road and Montgomery Avenue in Lower Merion Township. That officer was not injured. Officials said the suspects drove the U-Haul to a Sunoco gas station along the 1000 block of Lancaster Avenue and then fled on foot towards Radnor Township’s Bryn Mawr section. As the chase continued, police received reports that one of the suspects was armed with a gun and knife. The pursuit occurred near Villanova University, prompting the school to send out a shelter-in-place alert to students. Police then captured one of the suspects near the gas station and a second suspect at a nearby park around 6:30 p.m., according to investigators. The shelter-in-place order was then lifted at Villanova. “It’s terrifying to hear something like that,” a resident who lives near where the chase took place told NBC10. “Especially so close to where you live. It’s something I would never expect.” A law enforcement source identified one of the suspects. We are withholding his name until he is officially charged. Police have not yet revealed the condition of the man who was stabbed. Pennsylvania State Police confirmed with NBC10 they were handling the investigation but did not go into further detail.
