As teachers  and students return to the  classroom, Florida Power Light Company (FPL)  is offering a variety of free  educational progr ams designed to enhance learning experiences and prepare students for future careers in science, technology, engineering  and mathematics (STEM). “At FPL, we believe that investing in education is investing in our community’s future,” said Kate Cotner,  FPL director of community engagement. “Through programs like classroom makeover grants, Captain Wattage energy shows and our Drones in School initiative, we’re empowering teachers and students with the tools they need to succeed.” FPL’s education programs include: $50,000 Classroom Makeover Grants Teachers in FPL’s service area can apply for $50,000 grants to transform their classrooms into 21st Century learning environments. The grants provide eligible public, private and charter schools across all grade  levels  the opportunity to update technology and resources while advancing curriculum and increasing STEM education exposure for their students.  Applications open this fall. Drones in School  program  The Drones in School program helps students build technical skills with small-scale drone technology as Florida’s demand for aviation professionals grows. FPL funds teams, supports teacher training and sponsors competitions that give students hands-on experience with emerging technology. Captain Wattage  Teachers at elementary schools in FPL’s service area can register for Captain Wattage, a free, action-packed show that captivates students’ imagination while delivering important energy conservation messages. New Worlds Reading  FPL supports New Worlds Reading, a free program that provides eligible students with monthly books and activities tailored to their interests through fifth grade. Explore the world of robotics From regional competitions to startup costs and travel, FPL has championed robotics for decades. Teams can apply for sponsorship dollars to fuel their programs and get students exploring the possibilities of technology firsthand. Electrathon inspires teamwork, creativity FPL is helping expand Electrathon America across Florida, giving high school students hands-on opportunities to design, build and race electric vehicles while exploring future STEM careers. Support may include build-your-own electric vehicle kits, training, car maintenance resources, race participation and more. Teacher of the Month In partnership with the Florida Panthers, FPL is honoring exceptional Tri-County teachers whose dedication inspires the next generation.
