RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- As millions of drivers across the commonwealth travel for Labor Day Weekend, Virginia State Police (VSP) is reminding you to lock up to prevent car theft. Since launching 34 years ago, VSP's Help Eliminate Auto Theft (HEAT) program has led to a more than 50% drop in car thef ts. “We’ve gone from over 20,000 auto thefts in Virginia prior to the program starting and less than 10,000 auto thefts last year," said Craig Hudson, VSP Special Agent. Hudson said that number continues to decline. In 2024, VSP reported a 15% decrease in thefts compared to 2023. The HEAT program educates drivers and law enforcement through community events and trainings. The program also offers reward money for car theft tips that lead to arrests, up to $25,000. They also offer free VIN etchings on vehicles, which make them less desirable for thieves. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a car is stolen every 37 seconds across the nation. State police offer four simple tips that can lower your chances of being the next target. “We say take your keys or take your chances. Lock your car, lock it or lose it. If you can park in well-lit areas and/or near a security camera and you can hide any valuables. If you can do those four things, you can virtually eliminate your chances of becoming an auto theft victim," Hudson said.
