(KRON)-- A San Mateo man was arrested after he was caught breaking into the backyard of a private home and attempting to steal up to $2,000 worth of belongings, according to the San Mateo Police Department (SMPD). On September 2, around 1:30 p.m., officers responded to the 400 block of Highland Ave nue after receiving reports of a suspicious person wandering around a private home. After talking to the person who made the reports, police determined the suspect to be Eduardo Ramirez Acosta and found him near the scene. More details emerge after Richmond standoff leaves officer injured Through reviewing security footage, police discovered that Ramirez Acosta had entered the backyard of the home and then broken into a closed shed in the backyard. Police say he collected about $2,000 worth of belongings and hid them in a backpack and a box. When leaving the shed with the belongings, Ramirez Acosta was confronted by the homeowner. He told them that he worked with a cleaning company that used to work on the house. Officers later confirmed that Ramirez Acosta was never an employee with the cleaning company. Ramirez Acosta left the items at the scene but continued trying to break into the main house, attempting to open locked doors and windows around the property, according to police. Ramirez Acosta was arrested for attempted burglary and second-degree burglary. When officers arrested him, they also discovered methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia in his jacket. After the discovery, police added additional charges of possession of a controlled substance and possession of unlawful drug paraphernalia.
