A police officer is recovering after getting shot inside a Pittsburg police station. The shooting occurred at the department’s booking room Thursday after what police are calling an altercation between an officer and a suspect when a gun was discharged, wounding both of them. Officers must also lock up their own weapons before entering. “When you take the handcuffs off an individual, they have a certain amount of flexibility that they did not have. And if they want to take you on, you’ve enabled them by removing the handcuffs,” Leininger said. “And you should not do that until you’re 100% certain that they do not have any weapons, and you yourself do not have any weapons.” NBC Bay Area reached out to the Pittsburg police chief specifically asking how a gun ended up in the booking room and who it belonged to, but did not receive a response Friday. Meanwhile, Mayor Dionne Adams is asking residents to pray for the officer, who is in serious condition. “All I know is one of our officers was injured,” Adams said. “And we’re continually praying to make sure he pulls through safely and he gets home to his family.” The mayor also said he could not share any new information on what led to the shooting, but assured the community a full investigation is underway. “I’m deeply saddened by what happened here and want to assure the community Pittsburg still remains a safe city,” Adams said. “I think the lesson here is that things happen.
