Faithful Down Under: What it costs to see the 49ers in Australia
Sep 03, 2026
SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- Following the 49ers on their first road game means packing a red-and-gold jersey, a passport and a travel budget.
For a Bay Area fan heading to Melbourne to watch the Niners face the Los Angeles Rams, a two-night trip comes to roughly $2,940 before meals, souvenirs and other
extras. The biggest hit arrives well before kickoff: the airfare.
The teams meet at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Friday, Sept. 11, at 10:35 a.m. local time, in Australia's first regular-season NFL game. Back in the Bay Area, that's Thursday, Sept. 10, at 5:35 p.m.
That means breakfast football for fans Down Under and an evening kickoff for everyone cheering from home.
Airfare purchased today puts a round-trip United Airlines basic economy ticket from San Francisco International Airport to Melbourne at just over $2,150. The nonstop outbound flight takes about 16 hours, so the journey requires some endurance.
The hotel offers the budget a breather. A quoted rate of $138 a night at the Melbourne Marriott Hotel works out to $276 for two nights. Marriott describes the downtown property as a five-star hotel, giving fans somewhere comfortable to recover from the flight.
Then comes the seat that matters most: the one inside the stadium. The lowest Ticketmaster price in our search was $467.50, with the next option at $560.
The search showed about 170 tickets available when it was checked, although availability can change. The MCG itself has a capacity of 100,024, including standing room, providing a massive stage for this California rivalry.
Getting from the hotel to the stadium adds another $23.50 each way for the roughly 1.1-mile trip. That's $47 for two Uber rides, or fans could walk the route in an estimated 25 minutes each way.
After 16 hours in an airplane seat, stretching your legs might be the easiest budget decision of the trip.
Here's how the sample budget breaks down:
The estimate assumes all prices are in U.S. dollars and one traveler pays the full room and ride costs.
There is one entertainment bonus: the Jonas Brothers are scheduled to perform at halftime, giving the Faithful a little more to show for the trip.
The jet lag, of course, comes at no extra charge.
