Colts name Anthony Richardson the team’s backup quarterback INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Colts head coach Shane Steichen announced on Thursday that Anthony Richardson will be the team’s backup quarterback. Richardson was competing with Riley Leonard for the job. “I was honored,” Richard son said. “I’m just blessed to continue to find a way in this league. Continue to find my way on a roster. I’m just thankful that they believe in me enough to promote me to QB2. I’m just ready to work and I’m willing to work for this team and just provide my best self for this squad to just help us win.” “I thought he did some good things through camp,” Steichen said. “He’s continued to develop and grow and learn and continue to get better.” Steichen said Richardson played better football in the preseason, which was the separator in the competition. Richardson has started 15 games for the Colts in his three seasons in Indianapolis, throwing for 2,391 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions in those starts. He has also rushed for over 600 yards and 10 touchdowns. Richardson, who was drafted No. 4 overall by the Colts in 2023, requested a trade this offseason.
