A judge granted the Philadelphia District Attorney’s office’s request for an injunction to shut down a speakeasy where an off-duty police officer was shot and killed. On Wednesday, Sept. 2, the Common Pleas Court issued the injunction against the operator of Nipsey’s Hookah Lounge, the spea keasy where off-duty Philadelphia police officer Alhassane Barry, 29, was shot and killed last month. “Today’s Common Pleas Court ruling effectively shuts down this illegal speakeasy, which has been a nuisance in the Southwest Philadelphia community and was the site of a fatal shooting that claimed the life of off-duty Philadelphia Police Officer Alhassane Barry,” Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner wrote. “While the Philadelphia Police Department’s investigation remains ongoing and we await their recommendation, what we do know is that this establishment — and others like it — operated outside the law and was a problem waiting to happen.” Alhassane Barry The incident occurred at the lounge near the intersection of 73rd Street and Elmwood Avenue back on Sunday, Aug. 16, 2026. Officials said both Barry and another man were shot multiple times by another man. Surveillance video obtained by NBC10 showed a marked Philadelphia police vehicle driving near the area around 3:30 a.m. on Aug. 16. Roughly 10 seconds later, someone is seen leaving the after-hours lounge before a fight breaks out. Shots are then fired, and people are seen running from the area. During a press conference on Aug. 27, Krasner said prosecutors believe the shooter was properly identified and has provided authorities with “his version” of what occurred that night. However, the district attorney said some of the details provided by the man require “additional investigation.” “The shooter does not dispute that he had the gun, which he provided through his counsel. He does not dispute that he fired the gun. He has described, and I will not get into specifics, his version of what happened at that time,” Krasner said. The man who shot Barry has not been charged as the investigation continues. Police said they recovered a gun and were reviewing surveillance video as part of their investigation. It was unclear whose gun investigators recovered. Krasner explained that there are multiple videos connected to the case and that investigators are still working to review and investigate all the available evidence. He said they expect to “know a lot more within two months.” “We may or may not have a conclusion within two months, but we will certainly know a lot more and be in a better position to inform the family and be in a better position to ask questions publicly without jeopardizing an ongoing investigation,” Krasner said. When asked whether this may be a case of self-defense, the district attorney said he could not provide an answer but that it is “one of the issues that is under consideration.” Krasner also vowed to shut down the speakeasy where the shooting occurred and said that Barry’s death may not be the “only fatality” associated with the lounge. According to Krasner, a young woman was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver near the establishment weeks earlier. He said he believes she was planning to go to the after-hours lounge. “The street itself, to the best of my knowledge, only had one open business, and that would be this illegal business,” Krasner said. “So, there is reason to infer she was crossing to go to this place when she was struck by a hit-and-run driver.” ...read more read less
