A TCU football player spent three days in the hospital with a brain bleed after police say he was punched and kicked in the head by a teammate who has since been removed from the team, according to an arrest affidavit. The affidavit says former TCU safety Jacob Fields walked up to wide receiver D ozie Ezukanma in the team’s locker room on Aug. 13 while Ezukanma was looking down at his phone. Fields allegedly punched Ezukanma in the forehead and kicked him in the head. Ezukanma suffered a brain bleed, concussion and strained AC joint, according to the affidavit. Fields turned himself in Sunday. He is no longer on the TCU football team. According to the arrest affidavit, Ezukanma told police he believed Fields attacked him because he “was playing better than him in practice the day before.” He also told police, “They had been going hard at each other since the start of camp.” Ezukanma showed police texts he said Fields sent after the incident. “I made an emotional decision cause of how I felt played the last few practices.” “Wish I could take all this back.” “I’ll pay every hospital bill and then some to make this right.” Ezukanma spent three days in the hospital. His family said he is doing OK and wants to return to the field once he is medically cleared. “The only thing he wants to do right now is be on the field. So he just needs to get cleared. And when that happens, he is going to have an amazing season,” Ezukanma’s sister, Emelie Ezukanma, said. “What I want now is really accountability.” TCU is moving forward after losing its first game of the new season last weekend, while the off-field incident remains under investigation. Asked how the team handles distractions, TCU head football coach Sonny Dykes said he was proud of how his players have responded. “I mean, they’re young people. They work through things all the time. Yeah, look, I’m proud of the way these guys have handled themselves,” Dykes said.
