The Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office is seeking to try a 17-year-old Salinas boy charged in connection with a deadly mass shooting at a pop-up party near Morgan Hill as an adult.
The July 25 shooting left 18-year-old Desi Romero V dead and six others injured. The unidentified suspe
ct was arrested last week and subsequently charged with six counts of attempted murder and one count of murder.
“They have to reflect the danger to the community that this individual poses,” assistant Santa Clara County District Attorney James Gibbons-Shapiro said Monday. “The Santa Clara County DAs office will never treat a mass shooting as a youthful transgression.”
The district attorney’s office said the process of getting the case moved to adult court could take months. Until then, a judge ordered the suspect to be held in juvenile custody with no bail.
“Nothing can bring my son Desi back, but I feel a small sense of relief knowing that the person responsible for murdering him and seriously injuring six others is in custody and will be held accountable,” Romero’s mother Stephanie Trombly said.
The Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office is still trying to determine a motive for the mass shooting.
“We believe that the fights started initially and that caused the uproar with people and then eventually somebody, the suspect, was the one that pulled out the gun and shot into the crowd,” Capt. Sugey Jaimez said.
