SA Hotel Announces the Eagerly Awaited Opening of its High Tech Recording Studio       The historic SA hotel, Gunter Hotel is pleased to announce that the long-awaited recording studio, The Gunter Studio, is now open. The completion of this state-of-the-art facility marks the fulfillment of a major $57+ million renovation at the hotel. The Studio, designed by producer and musician Michael Ramos and acoustician Steve Durr, is the ultimate acknowledgement of the hotel’s musical history.     The Historic Gunter Hotel Opens Cutting-Edge Recording Studio   The launch of the Studio is the ultimate reflection of the hotel’s mission to honor the deep and iconic role that music has always played at The Gunter. Inspired by legendary blues musician Robert Johnson’s historic first recording in room 414 in 1936 and generations of live music, big band leaders and live music broadcasts that once filled its halls, the hotel now steps back into its role as a gathering place for music and music lovers from near and far.       The Gunter Studio, designed by noted producer and musician Michael Ramos and acoustician Steve Durr, will function as a professional resource for musicians throughout Texas as well as visiting artists that will participate in the music program at The Gunter and at San Antonio’s many other notable music venues. Additionally, The Gunter Studio will be a resource for the next generation of musicians and producers in San Antonio and be available to students and nonprofits as a resource for supporting and inculcating creativity in the community.     To celebrate the monumental launch of the Gunter Studio, the hotel will welcome the public to view the space from 6 to 7 p.m. on September 2, and September 9 prior to its Singer Songwriter Series taking place in the Studio Lounge. For guests looking to enjoy the Singer Songwriter sessions starting at 7 p.m., tickets can be purchased here.       “From the very start of this renovation, we felt that we had a duty to honor the music that has filled these halls for over a century,” said Owner and Managing Director at Axle Capital Jiwon Choi. “We hope that the Gunter Studio will create more legendary musical moments that people will be talking about for years to come.”       Introducing Gunter Studio   Located on the hotel’s second floor, Gunter Studio is a state-of-the-art recording facility anchored by a Neve Genesys Black 48-channel hybrid mixing console, one of the most revered boards in professional audio. The studio is outfitted with a curated selection of outboard gear from Universal Audio, Neve, Manley and Pultec, and monitored through Focal Trio studio monitors. Every detail was considered under the expert guidance of studio designer Michael Ramos and consultant Steven Durr.     “We wanted to make sure this studio has everything a professional recording facility should have,” said Ramos. “We worked to configure a layout that maximizes the acoustic properties of the space. Recording at the Gunter is more than a standard session, it’s an opportunity to leave your mark on a place rich with musical history.”       A dedicated sound engineer is included with every booking, and the studio comfortably hosts groups of six to eight. For those seeking additional inspiration, Gunter Studio guests even have the option to record in Room 414 of the hotel where Robert Johnson held his original recording session and have it piped down to the recording studio.     Adjacent to the studio, the Gunter Studio Lounge offers a richly appointed retreat where jewel-toned interiors, polished brass accents, and Art Deco details create an atmosphere as layered and considered as the music made next door. It is a space for listening, gathering and celebrating, making it a natural extension of everything the studio stands for.       A Century of Sound   The Gunter Hotel’s relationship with music is not a recent discovery, rather it is a legacy more than a century in the making. In the hotel’s early days, legendary big band leaders including Alphonse Trent, Mack Rogers and Henry Lange held residencies within the Gunter’s own celebrated venues: The Cave, The Keystone Club, the Rose Room and the grand Crystal Ballroom. Jimmie Rodgers, the Father of Country Music and one of America’s most celebrated songsmiths, called the Gunter home throughout his life, performing here and cementing the hotel’s place in the American musical canon.       No moment defined that legacy more indelibly than November 1936, when blues visionary Robert Johnson walked into Room 414 and recorded what would become some of the most influential recordings in music history. That session gave birth to “King of the Delta Blues Singers” and sent reverberations through generations of artists. Musicians including John Mellencamp have made the pilgrimage to Room 414 ever since, drawn by the room’s mythic creative energy.       That history is what inspired the Gunter to build something worthy of it.       A Living Music Program   The studio is the newest expression of a music program that runs through every corner of the hotel. Each guest room features a record player and a copy of “King of the Delta Blues Singers,” connecting every guest directly to the moment that made Room 414 famous. A vinyl lending library of nearly 1,000 records, curated with the help of the hotel’s onsite Vinyl Ambassadors, accomplished DJs and devoted music aficionados, invites guests to score their own stay. At Bar 414, named for the room that put the Gunter on the musical map, live music is a weekly constant, showcasing the artists and sounds of San Antonio and Texas in a space that has always known how to hold a crowd.     As part of its dedication to music, the Gunter Hotel has formed a special musical council to advise on programming, the recording experience and more. The council currently includes members like blues musician Nicky Diamonds, musical advocate Celeste Quesada, musician and producer Adrian Quesada of the Grammy Award-winning Black Pumas, Will and Noel Bridges of Antone’s Nightclub, San Antonio’s own Joe Reyes and cosmic cowboy Garrett T.
