This is the first time the two countries have traded fire in over a month. (CNN) Trump also posted an AI-generated video of Kharg Island, Iran’s oil export hub, being “blown to smithereens,” but there was no evidence of any real-life attack there. (Reuters) Several top military officials have advised defense secretary Pete Hegseth against prolonging the war with Iran. (Washington Post) The Pentagon has secretly hired some right-wing military influencers, giving them civilian roles that could influence policy. (Washington Post) Beat the Press: The Federal Communications Commission under Brendan Carr has acted like a personal enforcer for Trump. Yesterday he was especially explicit, calling for “rebuke or punishment” for NBC’s Kristen Welker over a segment about his mixed endorsement results. (CNN) Lake Headache: The battle over “Lake America” continued over the weekend. Google Maps quickly relabeled Lake Ontario according to Trump’s desires. (NYT) But Ontario premier Doug Ford erected a huge sign with the words “Lake Ontario. Now and Always” (in French too, of course) in Grimsby, Ontario over the weekend. (The Guardian) The White House responded in its favorite way: by posting an AI-generated video of Trump destroying the sign. (BBC) Administration perambulation: Benjamin Netanyahu’s son, who lives in Miami, was evacuated from the US over a “significant threat.” The Israeli prime minister said Iran had tried to kill one of his sons. (Politico) The USDA’s three key cyclospora research projects are being shelved, even as the foodborne parasite has sickened thousands this summer. Calling all fellow oyster lovers: get yourself to Catahoula, the four-month-old New Orleans-style brasserie in Navy Yard. I checked out its Restaurant Week menu on the breezy riverfront patio earlier this week, and was taken with many of the dishes—the guppies (basically hushpuppies) with honey butter, the destination-worthy chicken gumbo, and most of all, a sampler plate of three styles of broiled oysters. The best were the Oysters Evangeline, swimming with garlic butter, fermented chili, and orange zest.
