A man was arrested after allegedly threatening to kill a woman and firing at officers near Manzanita Park in Oakland on Sunday, police said. The police department said they received multiple 911 calls at 10:30 a.m. about a man threatening to kill a woman at Manzanita Park. Officers arrived at the scene, and the suspect immediately began shooting at the officers, police said. Authorities said the officers returned fired and the suspect fled to the neighborhood. Authorities added the woman was rescued and taken to a safe place. Oakland PD set up a command center inside the perimeter, which encompassed the Manzanita Park neighborhood. After more than three hours, police Chief James Beere announced officers captured the suspect, who used fire in his last-ditch battle effort with police. “During that process he started throwing flammable cans, that he lit on fire, at police officers, and he lit the building that he was in on fire. The officers had to emergency deploy smoke, to get him to exit the building, at which point our canine-tactical team took him into custody,” Oakland Police Department Chief James Beere said. Beere said investigators believe the gunman knew the woman rescued by officers. The chief says the suspect is currently being treated at an Oakland hospital for injuries sustained in the arrest. This is a developing story. Details may change as more information becomes available. Stay tuned for updates. ...read more read less
